Decision Making – Take the Red Pill

by Alec Satin

In career decisions, when faced with two or more choices, the challenging one is often the best.
There’s an old Navy (or Zen) expression of living as if your hair is on fire.  An application of this is to make every moment count.

Do you remember how it felt when you first started your current job?  New jobs can be scary.  They also can be a time of active and intense learning.  You are very fortunate if you have a job which continues to offer you opportunities to learn and develop your skills after the first six months to one year.

If your job is no longer challenging you, it is up to you to find challenges in the work for yourself, your company and your client.

Most of us as humans enjoy predictability.  This leads to security at the cost of development.

The next time you have the opportunity to make a choice at work, take the harder one.  This could be:

  • Volunteering for a project you know very little about.
  • Offering a lunchtime brown-bag discussion on something of interest to you.
  • Suggesting a way to increase the efficiency of your workplace.

Have you made recently taken a challenging choice at work?  Write it in in the comments.
