LifeKey – Seek Forgiveness Rather Than Permission

by Alec Satin

Life Keys are guides that can help in decision making.  This particular Life Key can be wonderfully liberating in the business environment.

What would you like to see changed at your company?  It may be something small.  What would need to happen to make this change?  What stops you from making it happen?

If you see something that needs to be done, you are probably a good person to do it.

Think about someone in your company who makes things happen.  How did they accomplish the last thing that they did?

If you look deeply into it, you may find that they follow this guideline.  From my experience, the leaders I respect the most all do.

Take a risk.  You may be surprised at how good it feels.

Agree?  Disagree?  Let others know in the comments.

Ok, so I understand, and even agree with, what I think your point is. I disagree, however, with the way you said it. Western culture, particularly U.S. culture, has succumbed to the “Nike philosophy” of Just Do It. I definitely agree that people more often than not hold themselves back by not seeking empowerment and taking it when they find it. I don’t agree with having people ask for forgiveness…rather, how about when someone sees an opportunity, they start the process IN PARELLEL WITH letting someone in authority know they are starting? That way, the thing gets addressed if there’s no response from the decision-making authority or it gets canned by the authority BEFORE precious time and energy is wasted.

Hi Tim,

Great points. A lot of this depends on the particular organization and situation. In many cases it DOES NOT MAKE SENSE to rush forward and do something. This is especially true if you know that it contradicts the company’s or leader’s direction. Hence the need in everything for common sense.

One definition of an environment in which any personal initiatives or efforts are destined to be canned: prison.
