In the business world, these are subjects most people fear to touch.
But they matter.
A good friend of mine is a successful business leader with a good job, masters degree, good looks and impeccable grooming. He’s well spoken and a true gentleman.
Driving home one evening he was pulled out of his car and treated unprofessionally by two Northern Virginia policemen.
Was this because he is African-American? You be the judge.
The reality is that race, gender, culture and religion do matter whether they are discussed or not.
They don’t matter because these characteristics make some people better or worse or more or less acceptable than others.
They matter because there are still many people around in the business world who make decisions based on false pride, past negative experiences, lack of skillfulness or fear.
