Being Positive

by Alec Satin

This morning I found myself once again taking a negative tone in a conversation.  A coworker was speaking to me about the benefits of life in Australia over the United States.  When I came to myself I realized that I was again spouting facts and figures about the declining US Middle Class (see here, here, or here).  All these things may be true.  But who likes a pontificator?  I sure don’t want to be one.
Negativity as an indicator
When I catch myself holding negativity in a conversation, I’m usually feeling indignation at an injustice being done to some group of people.

During the process of moving this blog from Typepad to WordPress, I had the opportunity to communicate with developers, designers and blog experts.  It was a remarkably pleasant experience which got me to thinking about the things that we as project managers can do to help make our project teams the kind of places people want to join.
Why this is important for you as a Project Manager

Why Another Project Management Blog?
As project managers we generally work hard and want to do a good job.  It seems to me that the most effective project managers are able to pull people together.  Their team members enjoy working with them and tend to deliver.  While often innate, such people skills may be learned.  As a project manager, the few minutes you spend focusing on the soft skills in this blog may provide the greatest return on your time investment all week.
My Credentials
I am a working Project Manager (PMP) with 20 years IT experience.  I have a Bachelor of Science [...]

Are You a Project Manager from Hell?

by Alec Satin

If you are like most people, you can think of at least a few terrible project managers.
These may be people who have supervised you directly or who you’ve witnessed interact destructively with their direct reports.
There’s a strange disconnect here.  Even though we all know of these managers, virtually none of us would consider ourselves a project manager from hell.  Are we deceiving ourselves?  Or, are we really immune to this behavior we so quickly condemn in others?
The project manager from hell series
Poor managers are the biggest threat to successful projects.  Like most of you reading this, I have witnessed firsthand [...]
